SUTTON BOROUGH CITIZENS ADVICE BUREAUX

SHARP INCREASE IN DEBT ENQUIRIES

We have been startled to note a sharp increase over the last three months in overall client numbers (5720 up from 5574 in the quarter to 31st March); in debt enquiries (1059 up from 964); and in relationship breakdown enquiries (789 up from 540).  Also very worrying is the rise in average personal debt for families not on means tested benefits to £33,435.  This does not include mortgage capital and is the highest we have ever seen.

TAKE PART TAKE PRIDE WEEK Grow Your Own” or “Save Money – Save the Planet Too”.

You might not have welcomed the green hats and balloons which appeared at your reception desks but, as always, you entered into the spirit of this community event wholeheartedly.  As far as I could tell by Friday you had sold out of “grow your own herbs” and other gardening bits and pieces.  I overheard one client say, “It’s really good at Sutton CAB, isn’t it?” and you never know, it might lead to one or two people taking up growing their own food.

THREE PIECES OF GOOD NEWS!

Thomas Porter Thomas, who came to us as a young volunteer two and a half years ago today accepted a job offer from Croydon CAB.  As you all know, Thomas has been the most conscientious and reliable team member, volunteering for four days a week.  We will miss him greatly but give him our warmest congratulations.

Work Experience Volunteers We have now heard that all three of our young work experience volunteers will return to train with us as gateway assessors this summer.  We are so pleased to have you with us.

Legal Services Commission Contract We heard yesterday that we have been awarded a substantial new LSC contract from October 2010.  This will be to work in partnership on our LSC work with Merton CAB and with the Law Centre.  The award is a direct reflection on the work of this team to meet their relentless targets over the last years and we congratulate them on their success.

OVER AND OUT FROM ANN ….

For me, this has been an amazing five years and a real privilege to work with such a remarkable team.  I don’t expect to come across another group of people like you, whether advisers, receptionists, caseworkers, ICT people, supervisers, management team, gardeners, trainers, trustee board members, cleaners or gateway assessors – you have all been truly amazing in your commitment, your hard work, ability to develop, your team spirit … and, of course,  your sense of humour.  I am very very sorry I can’t be with you in this next challenging period but will look forward to hearing of your success and of your part in Sutton’s Big Society plans!  Steve is a very lucky person!
