The enterprising director of Sutton’s Citizens Advice Bureaux has decided to beat rising fuel prices and use sustainable travel by riding her horse to work for the week of Sutton’s Take Part, Take Pride celebrations.
The borough’s CAB director, Ann Kinahan and her colleagues at the three branches of Sutton Borough Citizens Advice Bureaux will be doing their bit for the community by embracing environmentally friendly transport to travel to work for the week of Monday 7 July.
Smarter Travel Sutton has been working with the Sutton Citizen’s Advice Bureau on a workplace travel plan to get their staff travelling more sustainably. Kathryn McLauchlan, Senior Transport Planner, said “We are impressed by the commitment that the CAB staff have shown to changing their travel behaviour for the better. Ann Kinahan is an inspiration for her staff and that’s why we’ve nominated her as a local champion in the London Sustainable Transport Awards”.
Indiana, the horse, is seven years old and usually divides her time between eventing competitions and enjoying the grass in her field in Bromley, so may not be a viable mode of transport for getting to work all year round. However, approximately 50 other CAB staff and volunteers will use sustainable alternatives such as their bikes, the bus, scooters, roller blades, or good old fashioned shoe leather. Their efforts will be rewarded with book tokens and goodie bags provided by Smarter Travel Sutton, local traders and breakfast cooked by volunteers.
Exec Councillor, Sean Brennan said “ The council is committed to making the borough cleaner and greener. Environmental and community sustainability is very important to us.
Eco travel initiatives like this set a really positive example and embody our ‘take part, take pride in your community’ thinking. The more people get involved and feel part of the borough, the more we can work together to make it an even better place in which to work and live”.
Take Part, Take Pride week celebrates Sutton's diversity so people can get involved and share activities with others and help to build an even better community. Local people and companies are using the week to showcase their skills, share their experiences, or raise awareness of an issue close to their heart.
Building on the success of the previous two years, there are events lined up borough wide. These range from a beach party - with real sand - in Sutton High Street (organised by the RNLI), a borough wide 'Sutton in Bloom' gardening contest, and a Pirates Fair in Cheam.
