Completion of Disability Access Work atCarshalton & Wallington Branch of Sutton Borough Citizens Advice BureauxAccess to the Carshalton & Wallington Branch of Sutton Borough Citizens Advice Bureaux took a significant step forward last week with the completion of a £95,000 project funded by the City Bridge Trust. Improvements include an accessible ground floor bathroom, a platform lift for first floor access, installation of stair rails, redecorating to improve access for visually impaired people and a ramp to the front door.
The project started with a detailed access audit carried by Sutton Centre for Independent Living and Learning and a survey/ questionnaire of visitors to the building to obtain view of people with disabilities who will use the building.
Steve Triner, the Borough Advice Services Manager of Sutton says that work was undertaken not only for the benefit of CABx clients but also to make the building accessible to staff and volunteers with limited mobility or sensory impairment.
“We, like any organization providing a service to the public have to comply with the Disability Discrimination Act, but we will all – clients, volunteers and staff- benefit greatly from the work. “
The project was managed by Colin Shea, a local architect with experience of disability access work. The building work was completed by Roach Bros, a well-established local firm of builders.
The New facilities were opened on Monday 7th July in a ceremony attended by John Merivale of City Bridge Trust. A ribbon was cut by Thomas a young volunteer with Sutton Borough CAB service. The new lift facilities were tested by a volunteer wheelchair user who expressed her satisfaction that they opened a wide range of advice services and training opportunities to those with limited mobility.
