Volunteers are at the heart of Sutton Borough CABx Service. We usually have approximately 50 volunteers in our service. Our volunteers range in age from teenagers to over 80. We want our volunteers to reflect the local community. Our volunteers therefore cover a range of ethnic origins, gender, sexuality, religion and disability. Some volunteers have been with us for in excess of 20 years and other volunteers are only with us for a few months to gain experience to move into paid work.
We offer various roles in a stimulating working environment with the satisfaction of making a real difference to the community - we have never heard a CAB volunteer complain of boredom! We will shortly be offering accreditated awards for our short training courses. We always have opportunities for volunteering - we have a variety of roles including those below. However, if you have other ideas about how you can contribute to our service, we would like to hear from you.
Gateway Interviewing - getting clients onto the right track
- Interviewing the public on the telephone and making a decision with help from the supervisor as to how the client can be helped most appropriately
- Recording the interview

Information Assistance - the face of our service
- Helping clients find an appropriate leaflet or fact sheet
- Showing clients how to look information up on the internet
- Keeping a record of how many clients you have helped

Adviser Training - solving problems
- Advising the public on issues such as welfare benefits, employment and debt
- Writing letters and completing forms for and on behalf of clients
- Consulting with specialist organisations on complex cases

Data Input - keeping us up to date
- Transferring data from our diagnostic interview computer system to our case recording system
- Other administrative tasks such as filing and photocopying
